2008: A Recap

Well the year 2008 has come and gone. Thinking back to all that happened in 2008 I figured a recap of the year wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

Family: I love my family. In 2008 Marcia and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary. It is crazy to think that 11 years after meeting two people would love trust and respect each other as much as we do. She continues to make my heart smile. Also our son Gabe turned 3. I never imagined being a father would be as cool as it is, but he has made it a very rewarding experience.

The MOB Crew: When my sister’s family moved a mile away that gave me a lot of extra time to spend with my brother-in-law Chrisshon. It also made me realize that we could share our love for music. What started out with the two of us sitting one the couch staring at the laptop has evolved into 5 of us, a mini home studio, a vocal isolation booth, and a website. I hope 2009 treats us as well as 2008 has.

Twitter: So in 2008 I started using twitter and have to say that I wish I had this service for the last 10 years, it is so nice and handy. I have become a bit of a twitter junkie and perhaps spend too much time on it, but must say I love using it.

Damn I am old! I celebrated my 30th birthday and I got to spend it in Germany, which was amazing. I can’t say that I ever spent too much time thinking “what will life be like when I am thirty”, but as I reflect on the last year I must say. I have a pretty good life.

Work Projects: I have had a project that I cannot discuss much at work that has consumed much of my time over the last year. It has been very rewarding and has provided a unique opportunity to grow as an individual. I am excited that we are nearing a production launch of the product that has taken so much time.

Upper Iowa University: This has been as much a positive as a negative, however I am now over 60% done with my bachelors program at Upper Iowa. I used to have to force myself to feel like I was learning something, but looking back I see there are things that I have learned that have crossed over professionally. I will be most excited to finally be done, but that won’t happen until 2010 or 11.

Google Reader: Okay for some reason I hadn’t used reader until 2008, despite being a very loyal Google user since they launched. One of the things I realized in 2008 was that I spend way too much time managing links to hundreds of sites to keep up on blogs and news. So in my attempt of improving my time management skills I started using Google Reader. This has since become a regular part of my daily browsing ritual. The improvements such as “categories” have made Reader even more user-friendly and usable.

Recording Studio with a Vocal Isolation Booth

OK so I have been a super slacker when it comes to updating the blog lately.  I did however launch a new blog for my Hip Hop crew: The MOB Crew. So as you may already assume I have spent a bunch of time with these fellas recording and such.  One of the projects we undertook was building a Vocal Isolation Booth. For those of you who are not exactly sure what a booth does or is used for, let me explain. When recording (especially with a higher quality microphone) you’re going to pick up all of the sound that fills the room. Well when you pack 2 to 4 dudes in a room who are all drinking and feeding off each others energy that adds a lot of extra sound. To combat this it is desirable to isolate the performer and microphone from all other sounds. While not a professional build we ended up with an isolated and sound insulated room that allows me to record the best vocals possible.  Here is a full view camera phone shot of the booth:

Outside view of the Booth

As you can see there is a window that allows me to see in to the performer. I also have a mic on the desk that allows me to communicate to the person in the booth. Here is my brother-in-law Shon during a session:

As you can likely see we have plastered the booth, but haven’t painted it yet. Hopefully we’ll have that done soon. The following is another shot taken from the inside of the booth. I tried to make it a little bit artist with the shot taken and the microphone clearly in view. The inside is lined with a charcoal felt that helps absorb some of the sound.

Just checking in…

All right I have all kinds of fun updates… For starters I got a couple of new songs I have been working on and surprise surprise I am singing again in them. I have actually had a bunch of fun singing on these tracks so don’t be surprised if you see that a lot more in the future. Anyways here are the two new songs that I added.

New Music:

Consequences – This smooth rolling song just came to me over the course of a couple of hours. I actually wrote tons of lyrics but really enjoyed it more when I picked a few of my favorite lyrics and just repeated them a few times. I hope you enjoy.

Sometimes simple is better – I made this song in a night (minus the singing) and the next day I was playing around with some vocals and settled on toying with parts of the verse. I am pretty satisfied with the end result.

Both songs can be directly downloaded or you can click the My Music link at the top and listen to my entire collection of releases.

Nintendo update:

Besides my music one of the other things that has kept me busy has been the Wii!! So I know in my last post I blasted Nintendo and I still kind of stand by my points, but I have cooled off some now that I was actually able to score a Wii Fit. Interestingly I found one by checking online in the middle of the night when I was up puking my guts out. Wal-Mart came through for me and even delivered it within a day. So anyways, last Wednesday it arrived and both Marcia and I started using it right away. I must say that it kicks total ass and is way more fun then I anticipated. I have “exercised” pretty much 30 minutes a day on it, although I must admit that I play the fun balance games way more then I play the games that give you a good workout. I am down a couple of pounds and it has been fun to use… I give it 2 stubby thumbs up!

Social Network Overload:

So earlier this week I got a Plurk invite, then I got on another service and it was pretty obvious that I am not going to use all of them… but I have my name reserved in case 😉

Try out Plurk

Later that day I was out at digg.com and before you knew it I was signed up on Pownce too..

Tenny’s Pownce

I hate having online slop accounts that are nothing but place holders, but when the clear current winner (Twitter) has a hard time providing reliable service I would rather go the safe route and reserve my spot now.

Icon mania:

So back in the day I had a total thing for making icons. I guess the wanna be designer in me felt it was a good outlet. Anyways I didn’t like the pieced together logos and crap I had on my info page and decided to give my hand at some quick and dirty icon design. I have always been a huge fan of Inkscape for making icons due to the beauty of working with SVG. So I downloaded the latest version of Inkscape today and gave it a go. Here is what I ended up with:

New mini-album release: Pickles and Oranges

I have decided to do a 6 song mini-album release. I have been holding on to a few songs for a couple weeks because I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go with them. Tonight I put the finishing touches on most of them. I decided to release them as a group, but you’ll also find them on my standard music player as well. Without further ado this is the latest solo project from Jason Tennyson Pickles and Oranges.

Pickles and Oranges

Pure Thumping and Robot Girlfriends

I am just loving Reason 4! It is serious music magic; THOR kicks ass, the arpeggiator, regroove, all the other shit I have come to know and love = OMG goodness!! I swear I love just sitting hear making sweet, sweet music. Even shit can sound somewhat decent (which might explain some of the crap I have put out). This all brings me to the current fucked up title of this post. I just published two more songs so either head over to the music section or click the song to download a copy for yourself! So without further ado:

Going for broke – Alright so I admit it, this is kinda your standard floor thumping trance shit that I usually detest, but for some reason I couldn’t stop myself. I just kept adding to it and I actually like the end result, so much so that I would love to hear it on a worthy system.

Energy of the suns – I really loved where this simple ass song was going, it was beyond easy to put together. I had everything “complete”, named it, and then came to the conclusion that it was missing something. I spent a few hours on CCmixter going through some of the CC shit out there and then I came to Robot Girlfriend by Fireproof Babies and I knew I had to add it. My only complaint it the sample isn’t long enough so I had to do some duplication.

Loving the change!

So over the weekend I was a little bored and decided to do some spring cleaning on my sites. Image my surprise seeing the new Word Press 2.5!! I must say this upgrade was painless and I am so please with the updates they made. I also found some tools that will allow me to open the comments back up without being totally killed in spam. After the upgrade I felt like something was missing… After looking through the themes I found the Pop Blue theme you see now. A quick search out at DaFont for some cool type and some quick and dirty header updates and I was pretty much set.

Now what has changed is having my radio player on the front page. If you hate that I moved it just gimmi a shout, I am always interested in what other peoples opinions are. I like the layout and really like having a full page devoted to my music.
