I just sort of realized that it has been far too long since I have posted any of my music. I am still spending anywhere from 5-10 hours a week playing, but just haven’t been overly happy with any one project for a while now. Well over the course of the weekend I kinda got into an old school techno vibe and was really pretty satisfied with the results. It was a total throwback with a few wobbly additions here and there. In the end I can still listen on repeat and not hate it, so I thought I would share…
If you have ever checked out my blog in the past you would likely have noticed that music plays a major role in my life. I have so many various music ventures that I thought it would be cool to highlight each one of them in one place. Shamelessly I would recommend you check out all the different varieties of musical offerings I have.
First is my solo music stuff. This is published in the my music section of my site. Most of this music is Electronica in nature. Almost all of it was produced using Reason 4 (and Reason 2.5 and 3 before that).
Second is my hip hop music. I started a group with my Brother-in-law and some of his family members called The MOB Crew. We also go by the name Midwest Millionaires some times to mix it up. Just a warning most of the music here is loaded with vulgarity.
Third is my CCMixter music. CCMixter is a collaborative music site where people can upload samples, a capellas and remixes. It has been an awesome community to work with and has really helped challenge me as a musician.
Last but not least by any means is a jam band I have played with called Braille Music. Playing with this incredible group has helped me learn to be better at live improvisation and has opened my eyes to some of my musical abilities.
Sure there is a chance that nothing listed here will suit you, however I hope you enjoy the fruits of one of my favorite hobbies.
The world has gone Auto-Tune crazy…and I am actually ok with it. Sure it may be over used, but what isn’t these days. I know some of you are asking WTF is Auto-Tune? Well it was software created by the company Antares to serve as a pitch correction software. In fact chances are if you have listened to just about anything recorded with vocals in the last 5 or so years you have have heard Auto Tune and didn’t even know it. Well some genius found out that messing with the settings in unintended ways actually creates a crazy robotic sound ala Cher in “Believe” or T-Pain in anything he has done in 2 years or Lil Wayne in anything since the “Carter 3” album.
It has gotten so crazy lately that people are using Auto-Tune in all sorts of settings. To celebrate this I here is a list of some of the greatest videos using Auto-Tune:
For one of the first times all year we had a weekend with zero plans. This is really odd for our family, so we take advantage of these weekends as much as possible. These usually end up being great opportunities to recharge the batteries.
Well I decided that I would use this time to resurface my blacktop driveway. For those that have never done anything like this here is what all is required:
1. Clean the surface – This is usually a combination of removing all weeds that may be peaking up from the cracks, removing any debris (leaves, sticks, etc.), and removing any grease or oil that may be on the surface. This step actually took the longest, about 3 hours total.
2. Fill the cracks – There are two types of filler I use; a patch kit (looks like little pebbles covered in tar) and blacktop filler (which is dark goop that has the same consistency of honey). This only took about 30 minutes.
3. Sealer – This is what you see me doing in the pictures below. I ended up using 6 buckets worth this year. I spent about 2 hours here, so my grand total time spent was just under 6 hours. Here are some pictures and action shots!
I also spent some time meeting with the MOB Crew (my hip-hop group). These guys crack me up, and we have a lot of fun laying down some tracks! If you have any interest in checking out some of our tracks click the MOB Crew link at the top of the page. Just a warning this stuff is pretty much all R rated… so listen with caution!
sometimes having a blog makes me feel like a total online slacker. It is like a constant reminder of how busy real life can be. Needless to say I have had a lot going on since my last post. I finished a term in school (woot another A), I am now in a new term (a kinda fun Shakespeare class), I went on a family cruise (with the in-laws), and I have been helping my sister’s family move into their new house. I have also been busy with a side project and still have been making some music. Here is my newest tunage: Documents. Sorry for those who are checking in from time to time that I haven’t been posting more….
All right I have all kinds of fun updates… For starters I got a couple of new songs I have been working on and surprise surprise I am singing again in them. I have actually had a bunch of fun singing on these tracks so don’t be surprised if you see that a lot more in the future. Anyways here are the two new songs that I added.
Consequences – This smooth rolling song just came to me over the course of a couple of hours. I actually wrote tons of lyrics but really enjoyed it more when I picked a few of my favorite lyrics and just repeated them a few times. I hope you enjoy.
Sometimes simple is better – I made this song in a night (minus the singing) and the next day I was playing around with some vocals and settled on toying with parts of the verse. I am pretty satisfied with the end result.
Both songs can be directly downloaded or you can click the My Music link at the top and listen to my entire collection of releases.
Besides my music one of the other things that has kept me busy has been the Wii!! So I know in my last post I blasted Nintendo and I still kind of stand by my points, but I have cooled off some now that I was actually able to score a Wii Fit. Interestingly I found one by checking online in the middle of the night when I was up puking my guts out. Wal-Mart came through for me and even delivered it within a day. So anyways, last Wednesday it arrived and both Marcia and I started using it right away. I must say that it kicks total ass and is way more fun then I anticipated. I have “exercised” pretty much 30 minutes a day on it, although I must admit that I play the fun balance games way more then I play the games that give you a good workout. I am down a couple of pounds and it has been fun to use… I give it 2 stubby thumbs up!
Social Network Overload:
So earlier this week I got a Plurk invite, then I got on another service and it was pretty obvious that I am not going to use all of them… but I have my name reserved in case 😉
I hate having online slop accounts that are nothing but place holders, but when the clear current winner (Twitter) has a hard time providing reliable service I would rather go the safe route and reserve my spot now.
So back in the day I had a total thing for making icons. I guess the wanna be designer in me felt it was a good outlet. Anyways I didn’t like the pieced together logos and crap I had on my info page and decided to give my hand at some quick and dirty icon design. I have always been a huge fan of Inkscape for making icons due to the beauty of working with SVG. So I downloaded the latest version of Inkscape today and gave it a go. Here is what I ended up with:
I have decided to do a 6 song mini-album release. I have been holding on to a few songs for a couple weeks because I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go with them. Tonight I put the finishing touches on most of them. I decided to release them as a group, but you’ll also find them on my standard music player as well. Without further ado this is the latest solo project from Jason Tennyson – Pickles and Oranges.
