Wow, is it 2010 already?
January 2, 2010 – 12:48 pmActually it is 2 days into the new decade, go figure. It is crazy to think of all of the amazing things that have happened to me in the last decade. Two of the best and most important things to ever happen to me happened in the last decade; I got married and my son Gabriel was born. Marcia and I have now been together for 13 years now and married 7 1/2 years. Gabe is now almost 5 years old and brings me more joy then just about anything in the whole world. Marcia and I also just recently announced that we are expecting our second child in July of 2010!
Professionally the last 10 years have been a wild roller coaster that I don’t think I’ll ever forget. When I was welcoming in 2000 at work ensuring that the company didn’t come crumbling to it’s knees I thought I had truly found my niche. I was a computer nerd when it was wasn’t “hip” to be a nerd and I could talk to computers in a way few people could. I thought for sure I was destine for a life of computerized bliss, but that all changed when I faced my first real experience in corporate USA and was let go very shortly before September 11th, 2001. I went from getting to weekly calls from head hunters to being turned down by Best Buy for being “over-qualified”. I finally was offered an entry level technical support job at TDS Telecom that netted me a salary of less then 50% of what I was making at my past job.
Less then 2 years into my job at TDS Telecom an opportunity became available to move from the technical side of the company to the business side and become a part of the Product Management team. With this I was able to leverage my technical experience and my ego to help provide some direction on where I felt the company should be focusing it’s efforts. Ultimately this led me to make the decision to finally pursue a secondary education back in 2006, which should result in me getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in early 2011.
This has been an amazing decade, but it also has me eagerly anticipating all of the great things that will occur in the next decade. There are still many things that I want to accomplish and I look forward to trying to execute them over the next 10 years. I am not one to believe in resolutions every year because I feel it assigns a responsibility to actions one doesn’t normally believe to be possible. However, I hope everyone had a good new years and look forward to what the future has in-store.
